Legacies in Action
Charlie and Mary Booth by Wendy Norris Charlie and Mary Booth are simply a wonderful couple. Born and raised in Akron, Ohio, of modest means, they have been involved in nearly every community initiative imaginable – from scouts and church activities to shaping the future of Akron’s downtown development. I can’t think of another couple that is so universally respected in our community. Charlie and Mary established a donor advised fund in 1989 and have since made bequest provisions to Akron’s Community Foundation. The most remarkable aspect of their philanthropy is their commitment to instill the value of charitable giving in their children and grandchildren.Through countless examples, Charlie and Mary have contributed to and held leadership positions with dozens of local nonprofit organizations. Their six children have responded in kind through their own service and charitable giving and now continue the family’s philanthropic tradition with the grandchildren. In ten years, the family’s donor advised fund has grown 1700% primarily from modest but steady contributions from Charlie and Mary and tribute gifts from family and friends. Now in their late 70’s, Charlie and Mary continue to make an impact on their community. Charlie retired in 1987 after his military service and a career with a local bank. Today, Charlie serves as a special consultant to the Foundation. He is responsible for the development and stewardship of millions of dollars in charitable gifts. Prior to starting their family, Mary was a social worker. She continues to lend a willing ear and compassionate shoulder as a volunteer with several Akron charities. Mary currently serves on the Women’s Endowment Fund advisory board and has an active role in its $1 million campaign. Through their own philanthropy and inspiration to others to give back to the community, Charlie and Mary have made Akron a much better place now and for generations to come. LEAVE A LEGACY® – NCPG would like to thank Wendy Norris from the Community Foundation in Akron, Ohio, for sharing this story. |
